Inappropriate work hours, less time for rest and intake of too much junk food harms our body in a way we fail to notice. A diet low on fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, especially food low on fibre, causes constipation. Less intake of water is another reason.

Yoga can help reduce stress, which greatly affects digestion. Yoga also helps to aid the digestive system, and helps to relieve gas, cramping, and bloating. When practising yoga, we become more in tune with our bodies. Knowing how your body works and how it feels is a key to recognising whether or not you have digestive issues such as constipation.

Infrequent bowel movement leads to straining and bloating of the stomach and if not taken care of soon, in time can lead to hazardous diseases. The best way to prevent is to incorporate yoga in our daily routine. It increases the flow of blood and oxygen into the system. The blood flow and energy to your digestive system and its many muscles will help to keep your bowels moving more freely through the intestines and, if you are more relaxed, then less likely to strain or cause unwanted tension in the bowels.

Since most yoga postures involve pelvic movement, yoga practice can really help relieve our constipation woes.

Here are some postures which, if practised regularly, can set infrequent bowel movements to normal: especially twists, forward folds, and inversions. Hit your mat and try these two simple yoga poses that can be done in the comfort of your own house preferably on an empty stomach or if you had food two hours earlier.

Wind moving pose

STEP 1: Lie flat on your back and keep the legs straight and relaxed. Breathe deeply and rhythmically.

STEP 2: Inhale slowly and lift the legs and bend at the knees. Bring upwards to the chest till your thigh touches the stomach. Hug your knees in place and lock your fingers.

STEP 3: Try to touch the knee with the tip of your nose. This is not easy the first time. But with regular practise, you can do this.

Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds. You can extend it to a minute as per your capability. Now exhale slowly and come back to lie straight.

Half Spinal Twist

STEP 1: Kneel and sit on your feet with your heels pointing outward.

STEP 2: Then sit to the right of your feet, as illustrated.

STEP 3: Lift your left leg over your right, placing the foot against the outside of the right knee. Bring your right heel as close to your buttocks as possible. Keep the spine erect.

STEP 4: Stretch your arms out to the sides at shoulder level, and twist around to the left.

STEP 5: Now bring the right arm down on the outside of the left knee and hold your left foot with your right hand, placing your left hand on the floor behind you. As you exhale, twist as far possible to the left. Look over the left shoulder. Stay for 30 seconds.

Repeat the same the other side too. Do 3 to 6 rounds

Yoga for digestion

Two simple ways to improve digestion

The root cause of most diseases is inefficient digestion. If you have a healthy digestive system, it yields radiance to the body. That brings us to yoga, many poses of which are designed to help cleanse the body and soothe specific internal organs.

Ancient yogis concluded that the body's organs, especially the digestive system, could benefit from being compressed, twisted and massaged from the outside. While most modern yoga classes focus on the muscular and skeletal aspects of poses, the postures were designed with a specific internal organ or system in mind - not necessarily as a focus on the muscles and bones, as we think of it today.

There are many yoga poses which can help to improve digestion. But from all those, I am picking the two main but simple ones, which are easy even for a beginner.

The spinal twist will aid digestion by making it easier for food to move through the intestine. Meanwhile, the cobra pose helps stretch the abdominal muscles, stimulates circulation, improves digestion and relieves constipation.

Spinal twist

*

Sit on the ground with your right leg bent.

*

Cross your left leg over the right and rest the sole of the left foot on the outside of your right knee.

*

Support the left hand behind you on the ground and the right hand outside the left knee.

*

Twist your body to the left as far as is comfortable

*

Remain in that position for 10 seconds as you inhale and exhale freely.

Repeat the pose on your right side.

Continue 4 to 6 times

Cobra

*

Lie on your stomach with your arms bent, elbows close to the body, palms down in front of the shoulders.

*

Inhale and raise your head, neck and back as you straighten your arms. You can bend your head back or look straight ahead.

*

Stay in that position for 10 seconds, and then lower yourself to the ground as you exhale.

*

Continue 4 to 6 times.

Yoga for migraine

Keep migraine at bay - Qatar Tribune - First with the news and whats behind it

Keep migraine at bay

I've had many students ask for a simple yoga solution for migraine. That's what made me to write this article.

I'm sure all of us have dealt with a thumping headache from time to time. Some others have had to endure it for longer periods. The funny thing about migraine is that it's three times more likely to affect women than men and usually strikes adults between the ages of 20 and 50.

Migraine is a vascular headache caused by the inflammation and irritation of the nerve endings, resulting from the expansion of the blood vessels on the surface of the brain. It is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, mood changes, sensitivity to light and/or sound and tunnel vision (dizziness).

Pain may be felt on one or both sides of the head, in the neck, around the eyes, on the face, or around the sinuses. And when you get that typical headache, suddenly the only thing that matters is relieving that tension as fast as possible. But if you're looking for a solution outside the pill, you could consider a yogic breathing exercise. With the ability to help relieving tension, boosting circulation, and calming the mind, yoga can be a powerful natural remedy for headaches, and especially, migraine.

With yoga, you can increase the oxygen and the blood flow going to the brain. Normally, most of the time we are standing or sitting, and gravity pulls the blood down towards our feet. So it's a good idea to get that flow going up in the opposite direction towards the brain just by doing simple easy yogic breathing called 'Brahmari Pranayama'.

This breathing technique involves humming during the practice, which creates a vibration. Due to the humming concentration of the mind is also facilitated. It has a positive effect on the whole body and mind, and particularly on the nervous system, increasing the blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain.

How to

*

Sit in a relaxed posture

*

Cover your ears by pressing the cartilage with the help of your thumbs.

*

Place your index fingers on the forehead. With the remaining fingers, close your eyes.

*

Ensure that you are not putting your thumb inside the ear but on the cartilage.

*

Don't press the cartilage too hard. It should be gentle.

(Closing two senses eyes and ears can make us feel and experience the small sound inside us as a big vibration)

*

Inhale through both nostrils

*

Exhale with a slight humming sound:"MMM"

*

While humming, keep your mouth closed.

*

And inhale and continue the same for 10 to 20 times

(But do not overdo it)

“Yoga should be beneficial to both mind and body. That’s the basic concept of yoga. But due to the modifications in its practice over the years, today people think yoga is just for flexibility. I always tell them if we have to focus only on flexibility, then one can do gymnastics or [join the] circus,” says Vishnu Prasad, a yoga instructor with Doha’s Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village and Spa.
At 30 years, his understanding of yoga and its impact on our overall well-being seems quite profound. “Yoga is a complete science where each pose (posture or asana) activates different systems in our body. Each pose is like meditation and is done with highest level of consciousness and awareness,” he explains.
According to Vishnu, the various styles of yoga being practised today have standardised the poses. “What’s happening nowadays is that the teachers teach their students yoga like an exercise programme — ‘raise your hands, stretch your legs’ — and the students will simply follow the instructions without understanding why they are doing it.
“This standardisation creates limitations on their practice because they keep doing the same poses again and again. Eventually this leads to monotony and lack of motivation. Also the physical aspect of yoga is getting all the focus where as it is actually a combination of physical, mental and spiritual well-being.”
Vishnu has devised his own style of practice which he calls as ‘Swasthi Yoga’ based on Hatha Yoga principles. In this technique, he claims that there is no standardisation of poses as he sees each person/student as a unique individual and is taught the asanas as per his physical and mental condition.
“When I do group classes involving both beginners and advanced learners, if an individual can’t do a particular asana, I give him options. I say ‘you can do this’ instead of ‘you should do this.’ I always try to keep them motivated.”
Another important aspect of his technique, Vishnu says is that he teaches collective poses wherein learning one pose helps to perform more poses. “At the same time, I try to open up the entire dimension of that body part thereby providing maximum benefit. So the progress in an individual’s practice will be faster,” explains Vishnu adding that through a combination of breathing techniques and postures, Swasthi Yoga activates six systems in the body — cardiovascular, nervous, circulatory, digestive, spinal and respiratory systems.
Vishnu says he lays lot of importance on the involvement of mind during the practice. “To get the best out of your practice, your mind has to co-operate. So we have to first train the mind and then the body. When they both are equally involved in practice, then the progress will be faster.”
Vishnu’s technique and the rationale behind it seems to have proved beneficial not only for his guests/students but for himself as well — he won the Best Spa Therapist award in the Middle East Spa Awards 2011 organised by the Hotel Show in Dubai. “The award made my team very proud. This year too I’m planning to participate. Such recognitions motivate you to do your best,” he concludes.

Breathing exercise for stress relief
To combat stress effectively, we need to activate the body’s natural relaxation response. Breathing exercises are an ideal way to relieve stress as they are quick, simple and can be performed by just about anyone.
Anulom Vilom is a great breathing exercise based on ancient Hatha Yoga techniques. It helps to reduce physical stress and aids relaxation at any time. You can also practise it after giving a gap of five hours after eating. This will help the consumed food to get digested. The best time to practice this exercise is considered to be early in the morning before having breakfast.

Technique
1. Sit comfortably, with the spine upright.
2. Close your eyes and relax all your muscles.
3. Inhale from your left nostril while keeping your right nostril closed with the thumb of your right hand.
4. Retain the breath for a few seconds and exhale from your right nostril with your small and ring fingers closing your left nostril.
5. Now breathe from your right nostril.
6. Retain the breath for a few seconds.
7. Exhale from your left nostril while closing your right nostril with your thumb.
8. This will complete one round of the breath control (Pranayama)
9. You can practice Pranayama cycle for about 5-6 minutes per day.

(All breathing should be abdominal breathing, do not use chest and shoulder breathing)

Benefits
This exercise can be successfully used for the following conditions: feelings of tension, hyperventilation, burnout, headache, chronic fatigue, sleeping problems, concentration problems, anxiety and phobia, panic disorder and depression.
It is important to note that breathing exercises should not replace a doctor’s care in the treatment of serious conditions, but they can be an effective part of a medically-approved treatment.

Yama teachings from patanjali

Yama teachings from patanjali

The name of the first limb of the eighfold path, "Yama," originally meant "bridle" or "rein." patanjali used it to describe a restraint that we willingly and joyfully place on ourselves to focus our efforts, the way a rein allows a rider to guide his horse in the direction he would like to go. In this sense, self-restraint can be a positive force in our lives, the necessary self-discipline that allows us to head toward the fulfillment of our dharma, or life purpose. The five yamas--kindness, truthfulness, abundance, continence, and self-reliance--are oriented toward our public behavior and allow us to coexist harmoniously with others.Observance of the abstinence, or yamas, help attain a healthy mind and body. As Hatha Yoga is the yoga for attaining control over the mortal body, the yamas (together with the niyamas) are its essential first two steps. Further, the Patanjali states that it is not enough to observe them for their individual ends

Yama in yoga

Yama is one of the step in yoga

Yama The first system of Patanjali’s eight-fold system is Yama, which means restraint or control. The yama is mainly control in our dealings with the external world. While Patanjali lists only five yamas in his Yoga Sutras, the other literature / scriptures including the Shandilya and Varaha Upanishads, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Gorakshanatha, and the Tirumantiram of Tirumular lists a total of ten Yamas
